The North Lantern

During my second year as an architecture student, I worked with my classmates, Nattamon Premsoontorn, on a design project known as The North Lantern. This project took place within the Tropical Architecture course.

Situated amidst the mountainous region of Chiangrai in northern Thailand, The North Lantern stands as a captivating one-story vacation house. Drawing inspiration from the unique traditional Lanna lantern, the design of this house is imbued with its distinctive charm. The choice of materials and thoughtful lighting design collectively bestow a mesmerizing glow upon the house during the nighttime, truly living up to its name, The North Lantern. Furthermore, the roof decoration and clearstory elements of the design draw inspiration from the patterns found in the Lanna lantern, adding a touch of cultural reverence.

To ensure a comfortable living environment, we incorporated sliding doors that allow residents to open up their space, inviting in the refreshing breeze and promoting effective airflow. This deliberate feature not only encourages the circulation of fresh air but also facilitates a pleasant and breathable atmosphere within the house.

we integrated generously sized windows in the bedrooms to further enhance natural ventilation. These large opening windows enable residents to enjoy a constant supply of fresh and cool air, eliminating the need for air conditioning. This design feature not only promotes a comfortable and airy atmosphere but also contributes to energy efficiency.

The North Lantern boasts a distinctive tall stilted structure, providing residents with an extraordinary vantage point to savor the captivating views of the surroundings. It allows residents to immerse themselves in the beauty of nature while walking on lush grass.
