The Atlas of Forgotten Places
Studio Book Set :
The Atlas of Erasure
The focus of this studio revolves around the concept of "demolition." While architecture school traditionally emphasizes designing and constructing structures, the act of demolishing existing ones is another essential aspect of architectural study.
Within our studio, we conducted research on a specific facet of demolition called "post erasure." Given the diverse interpretations of this term, each of the nine students in our group chose a definition that resonated with their individual interests. We then delved deeper into studying and exploring the selected definitions. As a culmination of our research, we collaborated to create a collective book set titled "The Atlas of Erasure," showcasing our final findings.
The book set titled "The Atlas of Erasure" comprised nine books, one contributed by each member of our studio. Each book was given a distinct title, reflecting various aspects of the theme "Post Erasure." The titles chosen were Deletion, Transformation, Destruction, Forget, Molting, Reset, Subtraction, Cover, and Exclusion. These nine terms emerged from our studio discussions on the possible meanings associated with the concept of erasure.
Regarding my book titled "Forget," I perceive the post erasure site as not only physically demolished but also extinguished from people's collective memory. When something is no longer retained in the minds of individuals, we can rightfully say that it has been forgotten.
"The Atlas of Forgotten Places" is a book that delves into the narratives surrounding abandoned locations around the world. It explores the origins of these sites, questioning their initial purpose and the factors that led to their eventual neglect and extinction. This book consists of 37 pages that offer a combination of textual research, imagery, and my own drawings. Through the use of layered overlays, I present my personal analysis, unveiling hidden aspects and shedding light on the profound stories behind these forgotten places.
